“Cyberbullying is when someone repeatedly harasses, mistreats, or makes fun of another person online or while using cell phones or other electronic devices.” Approximately 20% of students report experiencing cyberbullying in their lifetimes. When asked about specific types of cyberbullying , mean or hurtful comments (13.7%) and rumors spread (12.9%) online continue to be among the most commonly-cited. Seventeen percent of the sample reported being cyberbullied in one or more of the nine types reported, two or more times over the course of the previous 30 days.

Adolescent girls are significantly more likely to have experienced cyberbullying in their lifetimes (25.8% vs. 16%). Girls are also more likely to report cyberbullying others during their lifetime (21.1% vs. 18.3%). The type of cyberbullying tends to differ by gender; girls are more likely to spread rumors while boys are more likely to post hurtful pictures or videos.

Approximately 43%of middle-school students reported being cyberbullied. Among the most commonly experienced included: receiving an email that made them upset (18.1%, not including spam), receiving an instant message that made them upset (15.8%), and having something posted on their MySpace that made them upset (14.1%).

When asked about specific cyberbullying behaviors, many middle-school students admit to engaging in a variety of inappropriate online behaviors. One-third of the sample admitted to engaging in at least one of the listed activities in the previous 30 days. Posting something online about another person to make others laugh was the most common response with close to 23% of students admitting to such behavior.

Oracle sues Google over patent infringement

Oracle has filed a lawsuit against Google Inc as Android phone uses its patented technology related to Java. Karen Tillman Oracle spokesperson stated, “In developing Android, Google knowingly, directly and repeatedly infringed Oracle’s Java-related intellectual property. This lawsuit seeks appropriate remedies for their infringement.”

According to Oracle during the initial manufacturing of Android, Google used Dalvik a Java compatible technology with development of cell phone operating system. According to Ken Dulney analyst at Gartner Dalvik is a clean room version of Java and Google used it with out acknowledging it as Sun Technology’s patent property. Dulaney Commented, “You can’t just take a Java application from a Sun environment, where it’s licensed, and run it on Android. You have to recompile it to Dalvik.”

Oracle acquired Java technology of Sun Microsystems in the first quarter of 2010. Java is an open source software which allows modification and application building just by a simple installation of Java virtual machine on any computer.

Oracle further added that Google was fully aware of its patent rights over the technology as Google also hired several Sun’ Java engineers to develop applications for its Android. Google’s Android applications can be developed by a number of other languages like HTML 5 and C language however Dalvik was used for smart phone’s core applications such as email.

Dulaney said that Oracle’s motivation was the overwhelming success of Android in the cellular market he added, “They own Sun now and they want to collect the royalties on the language.”
